Ever feel stuck trying to figure out what’s next for your career? You’re not alone. Whether you’re starting fresh, returning after a break, or simply craving something more aligned with who you are, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed by options (or lack thereof). That’s where a little structure can go a long way.

Enter: Canada’s Job Bank Career Planning Quizzes. These are free, research-backed tools to help you explore your personality, interests, and work values so you can make more confident career choices.

Check them out here

There are three short quizzes, which are all completely free and require no sign-up:

  1. Career Quiz - Discover careers that match your interests and work style.
  2. Skills and Knowledge Checklist - Identify the skills you already have and where you may want to grow.
  3. Work Values Quiz - Find out what matters to you at work (and why that’s important for your career satisfaction).

Why I Recommend These Tools

I’ll be honest—I love a good career quiz. When everything feels overwhelming and you don’t even know where to start, tools like these can offer a gentle nudge in the right direction. They aren’t the final answer to “what should I do with my life?” but they are a really helpful starting point.

These quizzes prompt you to think about things you may not have considered, like what energizes you, what kind of work environment you thrive in, and what matters to you. They can open up new directions to explore, especially if you feel unsure or stuck.

Here in the Acorn Avenue office, we regularly use more in-depth assessments like the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), Strong Interest Inventory, and Work Personality Index as part of our 1:1 coaching process. These tools offer deeper insight and can help connect the dots, but they’re best used with a trained guide who can walk you through the results. If you're curious about these, reach out. I’d love to tell you more about them.

But if you’re just getting started and want something free and easy to try on your own, these Job Bank quizzes are a great place to begin.

They’re:

  • User-friendly (great even if you're not tech-savvy)
  • Quick (5–10 minutes each)
  • Actionable (you get personalized career suggestions)
  • Rooted in Canadian labour market data

They’re especially helpful if you’re:

  • Feeling unsure about what to do next

  • Trying to narrow down your options

  • Wondering if your current path still fits

  • Preparing to return to work or make a career pivot

What’s the Difference Between Paid and Free Career Quizzes?

Great question! In general:

  • Free quizzes (like these Job Bank ones) are quick, simple, and offer a broad starting point. They help spark ideas and get you thinking in a new direction, but they usually provide general guidance.

  • Paid assessments go much deeper, especially when interpreted by a certified career professional. They use validated tools grounded in psychology and career theory to offer tailored, research-backed insights. These assessments often detail your strengths, personality, values, and motivations, helping you build a more complete and confident career picture.

Both have their place. It depends on where you are in your journey.

How to Get the Most Out of Them

Here’s how I suggest using them:

  1. Find a quiet moment with a cup of tea or your favourite playlist.
  2. Take all three quizzes. They’re short and complement each other.
  3. Write down what stands out. What surprised you? What confirmed something you already knew?
  4. Bring the results to a career coaching session (if you’re working with someone) or reflect on how they align with your current or future goals.

Remember: Use the suggestions as a launchpad, not a final answer. These tools are here to support you, not to box you in.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Start small. Start here. And take it one step at a time.

With you on the journey,
Jess
